THE SIGN
On 8 September 1974 a sign on the road out to the canyon pointed the way: SNAKE RIVER CANYON — JUMP SITE, with a big blue arrow. The crowd followed it to the south rim outside Twin Falls, Idaho, to watch him climb into the Skycycle X-2.
That sign was salvaged from the site in 1974. This is the real thing — weathered, rusted, still pointing — wrapped around a coffee mug.
THE DAY
A steam-powered rocket, a ramp cut into the canyon rim, and a parachute that opened early. Whatever you remember about that afternoon — the TV, the wind, the waiting — it started with people following this arrow.
