THE DAY
8 September 1974. He climbed into a steam-powered rocket on the south rim of the Snake River Canyon, outside Twin Falls, Idaho. The parachute deployed on the way up, the wind carried him back into the canyon, and he came down on the riverbank below his own launch ramp and walked away from it.
He didn't make it across. It is still the most famous thing anybody has ever done with a rocket and a motorcycle helmet.
