THE DAY
September 8, 1974. A steam-powered rocket called the Skycycle X-2, sitting on a ramp cut into the rim of the Snake River Canyon outside Twin Falls, Idaho — and a television audience waiting to find out whether a man could fly it across. The parachute opened early. The wind carried him back toward the side he'd launched from. He came down at the bottom of the canyon and walked away from it.
THE DESIGN
The X-2 itself, drawn across a starred blue badge with his signature beneath it, and SNAKE RIVER CANYON — SEPT. 8 1974 stamped underneath in heavy block type. A period design, reissued and printed distressed.
On mustard, which is not an accident. Harvest gold and mustard were the colors of the mid-1970s — kitchen appliances, station wagons, ski jackets. The ground is doing as much work here as the artwork.
