THE MEMORY
September 8, 1974. A steam-powered rocket called the Skycycle X-2, sitting on a ramp built into the rim of the Snake River Canyon outside Twin Falls, Idaho — and most of a country in front of a television waiting to find out whether a man could fly a motorcycle across it. The parachute blew at launch. He drifted down to the water's edge, and he walked away.
TEN YEARS LATER
He came back to Twin Falls in 1984 for a ceremony on the rim, looked out at the canyon that had beaten him, and said this:
“This great old Snake River Canyon is still standing here. God has not moved it one single inch and that take off-ramp is still on the edge where we can see it — and I don't see no big long line of daredevils standing here wanting to jump across it.”
