THE DAY
On 8 September 1974 he sat down in a steam-powered rocket on a ramp cut into the south rim of the Snake River Canyon, about a mile west of Shoshone Falls. It wasn't a motorcycle. It was the Skycycle X-2, built by Robert Truax, and it had a seat in it.
The parachute came out on the way up. The wind carried him back down into the canyon and he landed on the bottom, close to the water, and walked away from it.
THE DESIGN
The Skycycle photograph printed large across the back, with the #1 on the front left chest. Small from the front, unmistakable from behind — which is the right way round for this one.
