THE DAY
31 January 1977, the Chicago International Amphitheatre. A tank of live sharks, a shortened deck, and a CBS crew setting up for a live broadcast that night.
Hours before air, he took an unscheduled practice run. He cleared the tank and lost it on the landing — through a retaining wall and into a cameraman. Broken collarbone, broken right arm. The televised jump never happened.
Which is worth remembering, because Evel Knievel literally jumped a shark in January 1977, and the television episode that gave the phrase its other meaning did not air until that September. He got there first, the way he usually did.
