THE DAY
New Year's Eve, 1967. Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. A hundred and forty-one feet of ornamental fountains between one ramp and another, and a man nobody in that town had heard of yet lining up to go over them on a Triumph.
He came up short. The landing ramp caught the bike, the bike threw him, and the film of him tumbling down the Caesars parking lot became one of the most-watched pieces of footage of the decade. He spent twenty-nine days in the hospital. He came out the most famous daredevil in America — which is the part people forget: the crash is what made him.
