THE TOWN
Butte, Montana: a mining town on a hill a mile up, with steel headframes still standing over the shafts. The miners called them gallus frames — short for gallows — and meant it. Evel Knievel was born there in 1938 and worked those mines before the ramps, the leathers and the canyon.
