THE NUMBER ONE
In motorcycle racing, nobody picks the number one. It is earned — one rider a season carries it, and everybody else runs the number they were handed.
Evel Knievel wore his sponsor's number one on the shoulder of his leathers. He wasn't racing anyone for it. When a television crew put a microphone in front of him and asked him about it, he gave the only answer he ever gave: he wore the number one because he was number one. Then he went out and cleared the buses, and nobody in the grandstand argued the point.
That is the number on this tank — his claim, not a title anybody handed him.
