THE DAY
26 May 1975, Wembley Stadium, London. Thirteen single-decker buses laid end to end on the pitch and something like ninety thousand people in the stands, most of whom had never seen anything like it and never would again.
He cleared the thirteen. He didn't clear the landing. The bike got away from him on touchdown and put him down hard — pelvis, hand, vertebra. Then he stood up, waved off the stretcher, walked to the microphone and told the crowd he was finished jumping. He wasn't. Five months later he was at Kings Island clearing fourteen buses.
