THE DAY
26 May 1975, Wembley Stadium, London. Thirteen single-decker buses laid end to end on the pitch, ninety thousand people in the stands. He cleared the thirteen and lost the bike on the landing — pelvis, hand, vertebra. Then he got up, waved off the stretcher and walked to the microphone under his own power.
